ON THE HORIZION
Four new signings set for fall launch
By KAREN BLISS -- Record Magazine
ALBUM:TBA (EMI Canada/EMI)
STYLE:Urban pop
The Montreal duo of Antoine and James
wrote, produced and played all the
instruments on last year's five-song
independent CD, released on its own Phat
Royale label. The single, America, landed
at 43 Quebec stations and the video was
added at MusiquePlus. That success led to
a deal with EMI Music Publishing and EMI
Music Canada.
SET-UP: The guys are getting the full
treatment from EMI Music Canada, which
hooked them up with producers Peter
Mokran (Maxwell, R Kelly) and The
EuroSyndicate, whose members include
Berman Brothers (Hanson, Real McCoy),
Jeff Coplan and Joe West. The single,
Some Kinda Wonderful, was serviced to
radio Aug. 4, and a Tryan George video
has just been shot. EMI is counting on
MuchMusic, CHR and AC radio, as well as
a large media presence, to break Sky
domestically and set the stage for
international success. "We're shoring up
the necessary budgets required for an act
to operate in the pop world," says
marketing director Robyn Walters. "It's an<
expensive arena to market a band in. We're
not looking at this in an artist development
way. We're looking to make an impact with
the first single."
