Sparking A Deal
By KERRY DOOLE
This Montreal pop duo is presently
charting with a debut EMI single,
"Some Kinda Wonderful". The
group's premiere CD will be
released in early 1999. EMI Music
Publishing Canada's Michael
McCarty explains how the Sky opened for
him:"Bonnie Fedrau at EMI received a tape and was
intrigued so she bounced it off Barbara Sedun here
for feedback. Barbara played the tape in the office
and I also found it quite interesting, so it was on our
radar screen. A week later, Barbara burst in with a
video Sky had done for an independent single.
Halfway through it, I was on the phone with them.
We were consciously looking for a pop group
like this. When we first got the tape, we found the
songs interesting, and then of course you wonder
what they look like and the other aspects. With the
video, we could see they looked great, and had a
certain sensibility that said they knew what they
were doing. It just spoke to us. We pursued a deal
and signed them before the label did.
"There are instinctive things when you look at
an artist. You don't even have a mental checklist
sometimes. It's subliminal. When your
subconscious checks all the things off, it rings a
little bell! When we met the guys, we knew they
were smart. We got further into the songs and
heard newer stuff. We realized they were great
songwriters, highly motivated and special."
